Conference - Mission Racine: at the origin of coastal resorts

Cultural, Conference in Montauban
  • The conference by Patrick Buffard, Architect - Urban Planner, retraces the history of the major development project for the Languedoc-Roussillon coastline, decided by the government of Georges Pompidou under the leadership of General de Gaulle.

  • To carry out this major government project, an interministerial mission for tourism development in Languedoc-Roussillon was created on June 18, 1963, a little over 60 years ago! Its president, State Councilor Pierre Racine, gave his name to this mission, which lasted until 1983.

To carry out this major government project, an interministerial mission for tourism development in Languedoc-Roussillon was created on June 18, 1963, a little over 60 years ago! Its president, State Councilor Pierre Racine, gave his name to this mission, which lasted until 1983.

In just 20 years, the project led to the development of the Languedoc coastline, with the creation of seven seaside resorts: La Grande-Motte and Cap d'Agde in Hérault, Gruissan and Port Leucate in Aude, Port Barcarès and Saint-Cyprien in Pyrénées-Orientales, and Port Camargue in Gard.

Patrick Buffard, Architect and Urban Planner at CAUE 34, invites you to a lecture based on the "Mission Racine" exhibition, to discuss the highlights of this adventure and revisit the unique features of some of these resorts.

His goal is to raise awareness among everyone—elected officials, residents, professionals, and vacationers—of this great shared history, placed in context, and of the value of the spaces and architectures created. This will allow everyone to consider their future and their adaptability in the face of changing lifestyles, as well as current challenges, particularly the consequences of climate change.
