Delta: an alphabet letter for these “dunes that the wind moves and the water transports”; a letter for a living area, shaped by nature, which the human hand has shaped in turn. Delta: a perfect shape, an Anthropocene triangle – because, over the centuries, the planning power has made the Rhône delta an area of resources, with multiple consequences, sometimes disastrous and always complex, on the biotope. In this territory both wild and practiced for millennia, geological and mythological strata are superimposed, while the empire of the human over the non-human is diffracted into myriads of other relations of domination, and other memoirs.

Going beyond the documentary monograph, Fanny Taillandier continues her “Empires” series and excels here, with the Camargue as a crucible, in mixing voices in order to show the antagonistic logics that innervate the territory and to evoke sumptuous landscapes, worked by our myths and our beliefs.

This delta is valid for all the deltas of the world. And, while geography intertwines with stories and poetry, we randomly come across changing landscapes of water and salt, a fortune teller, magnificent outlaws, whimsical engineers, a serial killer and a mystical crane operator, all of whom recall the magical fabric of our representations.
