Fountain of Thouron

  • The Thouron Fountain, formerly known as the "Fontaine Vermeille

  • In the Middle Ages, the Thouron Fountain supplied water to the town's ditches. In the basement, two vaulted rooms containing pools were made accessible by a double flight of stairs. In the mid-19th century, the stairs were buried and the monumental fountain was built over one of the pools. Thanks to a pumping system, the Caussadais collected the water which then came out of two cast iron lion heads. The stairs were once again uncovered during a campaign to restore and enhance the aedicula...
