In Montpezat-de-Quercy there are remains of a Gallo-Roman settlement. The town reached its peak in the Middle Ages. Its destiny was linked to that of the Montpezat family, which appeared at the end of the 11th century.
In the 13th century, most of the noble houses adopted the Cathar cult. The second family of Montpezat owed its fame to Cardinal Pierre des Prés (1288-1361), a patron of the arts and statesman, adviser to the popes of Avignon, in particular to John XXII, who was himself a native of Cahors. Montpezat-de-Quercy has known the Wars of Religion, the great Revolution and all the upheavals of history, notably the wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 which cruelly affected it.
