Le Condottière joins the collections of the Ingres Bourdelle museum 33 years after its last acquisition of a painting by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, the Ingres Bourdelle museum has just succeeded in obtaining on March 21 "Le Condottiere", an oil on canvas by the artist dating from 1821.
After being part of the collections of Georges de Monbrison then Lecomte and Wildenstein, “Le Condottiere” was unearthed in 2012 in New York when it was acquired by the Talabardon & Gautier Gallery. It had not been presented since the 1867 exhibition at the Imperial Palace of Fine Arts in Paris, in homage to Ingres who died the same year. Painted during a stay in Florence, this portrait of a man in armor in a style reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance, is one of the very first historical subjects of the painter.
