Should I only believe in what I see?

Modern science, from the astronomical telescope to the microscope, has been built around what is not immediately perceived by the senses. Philosophy appeals to notions that are impossible to observe. Rhetoric, marketing use concealment strategies. As for esotericism, it also claims access to the hidden, to the occult.
But can we so easily distinguish between an invisible acceptable to reason and an invisible smoky and suspect?
