1958, in Nœux-Les-Mines, a small mining town in northern France.
Pierre and Vlad are the best of friends. They spend all their time together digging in the mine, raising carrier pigeons, and playing the accordion in the local orchestra led by Sosthène, the "lively barroom philosopher," a central figure in this small, jovial and colorful sphere despite the coal dust.
