Fritz and Clara Haber are both German Jewish chemists. Fritz is an ambitious, unscrupulous Nobel laureate in chemistry, a fanatical patriot who offers his services to the German army when World War I breaks out, developing poison gas. Clara, for whom the duty of scientists is to contribute to the happiness of humankind, rebels against her husband's blindness.
