Description

Thursday's poetry discussions will be devoted to the work of Silvia Baron Supervielle.
Born to a Uruguayan mother and an Argentinian father of Béarnese origin, Silvia Baron Supervielle began writing poems and short stories in her native Spanish. She arrived in France in 1961 for what was intended to be a short stay, which turned into several decades. After a few years, she resumed writing, now in the language of her adopted country, while still identifying herself as a writer of the Rio de la Plata region. She was the partner of the painter Geneviève Asse. In 1970, Maurice Nadeau published a selection of her poems in Les Lettres Nouvelles. Her first collection in French, La Distance de sable, was published in 1983 by Granit. Her subsequent books were published by José Corti, Seuil, Arfuyen, and then Gallimard. She has translated many Argentinian writers into French: Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Ocampo, Alejandra Pizarnik… She is the author of the Spanish translation of the poetry and plays of Marguerite Yourcenar.
